Telemetry’s reporting and collaboration platform supports any data that is important for you or your client’s business. It goes beyond the traditional three financial statements to sync and chart any arbitrary tabular data. Read below to learn how to set up your first custom KPI

We begin with a custom plan in Excel using the same Telemetry plugin that you use to map your P&L, balance sheet, or cash flow statement. Custom KPIs need to be created in the file as its own individual tab. First, go to a tab that contains the custom KPI data you care about.

Required Format

The tab should be formatted similarly to your financial statements. On top of the data itself, the format should contain

  1. One row that tells us if you've closed the month,

  2. One row with a monthly time series,

  3. And one column that contains your metric labels.

Map Custom KPI Tab

Using the Connect tab, select Create Custom KPIs.

After choosing your label format, the correspondence to your actual versus forecast designation, select or type it's range.

Then, do the same with the months in your time series, finishing by choosing the first of the month of the first date in your series.

Finally, select your data labels and click "Save and Publish". Note that you can repeat the process to sync multiple tabs with metric data as shown in the video.

Turn on Custom KPIs on Telemetry Web

You can now add those metric sheets into the Telemetry plan on our web destination. To do this, find your plan at app.telemetry.fi and go to Settings, find the Statement section, and click Add Custom. This will bring the new data table into the platform. Give your table a name and select it from the pull down. Now it will appear as a table in your main plan views.

Build Charts from your Custom KPIs

To build a chart from this data, return to the plan settings, scroll down to the Analytics section, and click Add Custom.

First, choose the type of visualization you want. "Performance" displays one single metric and shows its period period change. "Data table" allows you to visualize specific metrics in a micro table.

You can create "bar and line charts" that graph an unlimited number of metrics in up to two different number formats, i.e. numbers, currencies, percents, etc.

Next, give your chart a name, then select the source of the data.

Finally, choose the metrics you want to graph from the list. If you choose multiple metrics from the same number format, they will be labeled on the left axis.

If you choose multiple metrics from up to two different number formats, they will be labeled on the left and right axis.

Note the preview on the right. If it looks good, click submit. Now when you go to the analytics page, you see your new chart, performance block, or micro-table.
